Jonas Brothers songs that describe what it’s like to be a fan

It’s difficult to put into words what it means to be a Jonas Brothers fan. It is something that has been such a huge part of our lives. The Jonas Brothers were there through some of our best and worst times and we can’t imagine our lives without them. Their music has touched so many people and really has made an impact. Of course, certain songs are attached to specific memories, but there are a couple that we realized define what it is to be a fan of the Jonas Brothers, especially for over ten years.

THAT’S JUST THE WAY WE ROLL

“And I know we get a little crazy and I know we get a little loud” This is basically the anthem of a Jonas Brothers fan. We can’t even tell you how many times we have gotten teased for how insane we are when it comes to the Jonas Brothers. For some reason in society it is acceptable to be obsessed over sports but when it comes to music, it is looked down upon as a silly teeny bop phase. Something that we learned as we got older is that at the end of the day, your happiness is the only thing that matters. The Jonas Brothers make us so happy and that’s why this song means so much to us. Being wild and crazy Jonas fans is just the way that we roll.

WHEN YOU LOOK ME IN THE EYES

“You’re the light that makes my darkness disappear” This song is one that no matter what, we cry listening to it. There are so many memories of us at Jonas Brothers concerts singing this while we wave our lighted phones back and forth with the crowd, tears running down our faces. This song means so much to us because no matter what was happening in our lives, or how difficult some things felt, everything was okay when we thought about the Jonas Brothers. No matter what we still had them.

PLEASE BE MINE

“I will be right there for you til the end of time” This is one that is similar to the same emotions that When You Look Me in the Eyes brings. To us, this is a promise of us always being fans and for the Jonas Brothers to always be there for their fans. Whenever they sing this song it really connects them with the fans. It is one of their oldest songs and so that is also why it means so much to us after all these years. Every Jonas fan remembers going on youtube and watching the video of the three boys sitting on the couch belting out this song. We think it would be awesome if they re recorded it eventually, since they sound so little in it.  Back around during the Camp Rock 2 promotion, they did a special performance with this song for the fans, and  there was not a dry out in the crowd.

SUCKER

“I’m a sucker for you” This one is pretty self explanatory. We are suckers for the Jonas Brothers. No matter how upset we were when they broke up, we instantly fell back into our obsession when they got back together. We will always buy their concert tickets, get their new albums, and support them in anything they do. It was extremely fitting that this was the first single back for them. Not only was it a great and catchy song, but many fans joked about how we will always be suckers for these boys, and they know it. No matter what they came out with first, we would have loved it but there is something kind of symbolic and right to be shouting these lyrics at the top of our lungs in the car or in concert.

ROLLERCOASTER

“It was fun when we were young and now we’re older” This is a more recent one that is super emotional as a Jonas Brother fan who has been here since the beginning. Pretty sure we cried the first time listening to this. Singing this song in concert as twenty seven year olds after not being at a Jonas Brothers concert in so long, was surreal. This song describes what the boys went through, but despite all the tough times, they would go back and do it all over again together. As fans we would too, we had been there through it all and there isn’t one regret.  Singing this at the top of our lungs as adults who never thought they would see them in concert again was an incredible feeling.

COMEBACK

“Come back to me, baby, i’ll come back to you” This one is pretty self explanatory. Over the years, fans have followed and supported their solo journeys, but every Jonas fan knows that when these three boys come together, there is something magical about it. Fans sing this song in references, if the three of them come back, we’ll all come back to them too. No matter what happens over the years, if they go on tour, if they come out with an album, we’ll be right there supporting them. It’s a promise that wherever we go, whatever we love, whatever we do, we’ll always come back to the Jonas Brothers.

THINGS ONLY DIRECTIONERS WOULD UNDERSTAND

The amount of sleep that we lost when One Direction were together because of the fear that Liam Payne was going to go live is insane. These were usually random so there was no telling when it would happen, so sleep was usually a risk. It amazes me that we still went to work and did normal things running on this little bit of sleep. These live streams were so much fun though and really made us feel as though they appreciated us fans. One of the most memorable ones was when Liam came on after they won the Brit award to thank all of us.

INSIDE JOKES

Oh gosh, how can we forget the endless jokes that are associated with One Direction. “I like girls who eat carrots”, “How many R’s?”, “Horan the world? Curls” are just a few random things that are triggering for anyone who was a fan of One Direction back in the day. One of the most ridiculous, but memorable thing we would do was go on Omegle.com to try to find directioners. We would ask “Horan the world?” and if they answered “curls” then we knew they were a true fan. This was something that was usually done on Tumblr and the reward for finding someone would be a self promo. I can’t believe this was our life at one point.

TUMBLR

https://shotswith1d.tumblr.com/

Whenever we think back to the days when One Direction were still together, we think of tumblr, more specifically, 2012 tumblr. If you weren’t a fan of One Direction during this year you probably know exactly what we’re talking about. We still remember seeing the endless scrolling of that blue feed as we sat on our beds blasting their music as the birds chirped outside the window at 5 am. It was the summer of One Direction for us. The night would start by going through the dash and liking edits of the boys, then we would host a rate my blog, maybe change our layout or get a new cursor for our mouse. Its hard to tell in the picture, but ours says “sex with one direction” and has little sparkles coming out when you move it. The frustration we would feel trying to compile the codes to get a new layout and theme, or if we were posting too much and got post limit early on in the night. It haunts us to this day that we can’t figure out the login for this account so that we can rejoin the tumblr world as One Direction (hopefully) make their comeback this year.

CAMPING OUT

https://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/direction-fans-camp-today-show-concert-article-1.1433922

One of our all time favorite experiences was when we camped out for One Direction on the Today Show. We’re from New Jersey, so luckily when the boys were in the city for promotion or shows, we would pretty much drop everything and be there. The amount of times we called out of work or cancelled plans is concerning, but ya know, priorities. So when we heard they would be on the Today Show, we knew we had to be there. We packed our bags, brought a train ticket and headed super early the morning before the show was scheduled. When we got there the line was already pretty long and around the corner, but we settled in and prepared to wait all day and night for them. More and more people showed up and joined the ever growing line as the day went on and random people asked what we were waiting for. That was something that got annoying when you’re on hour ten of waiting and the 200th person asks why you’re sitting on the streets of New York City along with another thousand fans. As day turned into night the security but barricades around and created little groups of people so that we weren’t in a formal line anymore. This was when the fun began and we made so many friends, it was like a giant directioner sleepover party. We ordered pizza to the street and ate dinner together, played cards, sang songs, and counted the hours until The Today Show began. Around five in the morning they moved the line to the area where the stage is and we had to stand close together to one another and basically just wait until the soundcheck started. Of course in that moment it began to rain as we were waiting. We did not bring an umbrella. 4 am Jaclyn and Marcella were not concerned about this possibility when they packed their overnight bags. The rain didn’t matter when the show started though, and as soon as they came out all the waiting was one hundred percent worth it. It was a wild and crazy night but we would for sure do it again and hope we get that opportunity to stay up all night again for them.

WAITING OUTSIDE OF BUILDINGS

So, some may say seeking the boys out while they are doing promo or waiting outside the hotel for them to leave is stalking. And that’s a valid argument. However, we liked to think of it as..exploring (in the hopes we will happen to run into one of them.) One of the best things about this was making friends who also were waiting outside of buildings in New York City hoping to get even a glimpse of One Direction. This was so frequent at one point that everyone started to recognize and remember each other the next time there was promo going on or they were in town. We loved being a part of the New York City directioners. We were all working towards the same end goal and even if we didn’t get to meet them, we still had fun and made friends. We camped out for so many hours outside of the London hotel in the city that we made friends with the security. Sometimes there would be a few people waiting, sometimes hundreds. We made connections with paparazzi, knowing they would have the inside scoop on where One Direction were going next for promo. We had at least three different paps numbers in our phones that year. It was a wild time. One of our most memorable times outside the hotel was the day they were in town for the Today Show. We had just woken up after falling asleep in a random Mcdonalds (dont judge, we hadn’t slept in 2 days) and rushed to the London hotel. The timing was amazing because as soon as we walked up they all came out and were greeting fans. The excitement when something like that happens is incredible. Some may think it is a weird thing to do, but only directioners or people who are die hard fans of something understand how much happiness this brings to us.

While we love and support all of One Direction’s solo careers, we are anxiously awaiting their hiatus to be over and have high hopes that we’ll get to see these boys back together again soon!

THE LAST OF US 2 – REVIEW

Last of us 2 is the sequel to one of the greatest video games of all time…

and one of the most controversial games ever made!

I’m sure most people reading this know exactly what I’m talking about but there may also be some who don’t ,so a quick warning that it is virtually impossible to discuss this game without revealing at least one big spoiler so continue with this in mind.

I’ll give another heads up when I get into the rest of them.

*****

This Last of us 2 picks up a few years after the last game ends with Joel and Ellie now settled into a relatively peaceful and tranquil life at Jackson,  a development that is about as close to a normal town as it gets in this world.

Ellie has just met a woman that she cares for and seems content.

Joel looks after her as best he could.

There is definite tension between them, however, because Ellie is convinced that Joel is hiding the truth about what happened with the Fireflies at the end of the last game.

For those of you who may have missed it, the finale of the last game had Ellie on the operating table being worked on by doctors who needed to remove fungus attached to her brain to create the vaccine that could actually cure the virus that had decimated the planet.

There was no way to remove this without killing her, but they thought there was no choice.

Ellie was the only human found to be immune and was heroic in her desire to help and wanted her life to “matter”in a world gone mad.

Though she wasn’t his real daughter, through the course of the first game Joel grew to love and care for Ellie.

He stormed through the fireflies base killing their forces, burst into the operating room and killed the doctors about to perform the surgery.

He rescued Ellie but in so doing, doomed the entire world.

In the opening moments of the game, you see there is a distance between them, the details which get revealed later.

Joel goes out on a routine supply run with his brother and ends up running into a group of people whom he rescues from an army of infected.

In a devastating scene, he is rewarded by being brutally killed by them.

By one in particular.

His death drives the game as it is basically a revenge story with Ellie hunting down those responsible the entire first half of the game.

The gameplay is excellent-unquestionably much better than the original game.

Ellie is tough, fast, and agile -able to jump, crawl and climb this time around, making it much easier to move especially during the combat sequences

The combat is also more fluid and brutal, with several new weapons, traps and explosives.

Good thing too, because you’ll need them to fight the games much smarter and more aggressive enemies.

The human and non human both are some of the smartest I’ve ever encountered in gaming-sneaking up on you, flanking and chasing -making each encounter with them filled with tension and suspense.

The new characters that accompany you as you battle them are just  terrific.

Dina, her girlfriend is a great ally and when you are working with her in the early hours of the game  it does feel like a there real person right there with you.

I’ve seen reviews online where they dismiss her as not very helpful but she sure helped me!

Jesse, Dinas old boyfriend is also a very likeable character and a big help the few times you work alongside him as well.

But ..

we still sure miss Joel.

The flashbacks throughout the story featuring Joel and Ellie were the best parts of the game and really reminds us how important that dynamic was in the success of the original game –

and as much as we enjoy these new characters, they don’t quite capture that magic.

But then, they only have half a game to do it in.

So…

Here comes the rest of the SPOILERS…

****

The entire second half of the game you play as Abby.

She is the woman who beat Joel to death with a golf club.

This is the main reason why there is such division and controversy surrounding this game.

Never before has a video game forced you to play as an antagonist that was so hated for destroying such a beloved character.

The very idea of it seems ridiculous and to many gamers it was completely unacceptable and something they could not get passed, no matter how stellar the gameplay was.

I thought I felt that way as well.

Kill Joel viciously and make you play as his killer?

What were they thinking?

But after actually playing the game, incredibly….

It works.

When you first switch to Abby it is jarring and just feels wrong somehow, but then you slowly get into her story and come to understand her motivation-which was getting revenge on Joel for killing her father, who just happened to be the doctor who was about to operate on Ellie in the original games finale.

It never gets to the point where you forgive her, but you do end up at least seeing it from her point of view.

The Abby character you see depicted here is truly heroic and seems completely incapable of torturing and killing Joel so viciously.

This is a bit of a plot hole and it does seem like they may have been going for some shock value in that death scene.

The game spends a lot of time trying to get you to warm up to her and her friends and allies.

This is difficult at first, of course, since we saw what they did to Joel but eventually you do get caught up in their story.

It helps that they are in a battle with a religious cult called Seraphites who are creepy and evil-communicating with whistles while torturing and burning their enemies.

They are so nasty that it is easy to hate them and side with Abbys group against them.

The pacing in these early scenes with Abby is uneven as they  throw in a lot of flashbacks and try to add depth to her story and to her allies.

These scenes are necessary, however, because they are tackling very big themes here-revenge and empathy-and they really try just about everything to make it work, including having you play with their dog!

Eventually you meet up with two fugitives from the cult-Lev and his sister Yara and it is here where Abbys story hits its stride.

Lev turns out to have a secret and is being hunted with his sister by the Seraphites.

Lev and his sister are great characters and they bring a warmth and humanity to Abby that she did not have before their appearance.

It is only then, when Abby fights to protect them from the cultists and eventually against her own people that we get fully on board and begin to connect with her.

The gameplay in this section is brilliant.

Abby is a powerful character and controls completely different than Ellie-much stronger and resilient , though not quite as quick and nimble.

The combat is exciting because of this, since we could use her pure strength for more effective melee attacks and close up fighting.

She also has the benefit of some of the best sequences in the entire game including the games two best boss battles and an incredible horseback chase and gunfight through the burning city on Scars island.

This all leads up to the two stories coming together towards the end and this is where much of the games emotion and power comes in.

It begins with a boss battle-believe it or not-with Ellie.

This is the most difficult fight of the game simply because no one wants to play it.

No matter how invested in Abbys story we had gotten, there was absolutely nothing the game could have done to get us to root for her against Ellie so we were essentially trying to kill our hero-a character that we all love.

This enraged gamers and YouTube is filled with videos of everyone absolutely furious at having to play this out to continue the story.

Abby and Ellie at this point are both broken-

destroyed by their drive for vengeance.

When it all ends the player is left feeling exactly like the characters.

Exhausted and spent.

****

This game has divided player all over the world.

Most were simply furious at the death of Joel, and were angered at how the original characters that they loved seemed to have been pushed aside in favor of all the new characters.

It almost felt like a betrayal.

I do understand that point of view and there definitely seems to be something to it…

But still…

There is no question that Last of us 2 is an absolutely incredible video game.

The production value and gameplay is excellent across the board with amazing next gen graphics that , like it’s predecessor, pushes its native system-in this case the PS4- about as far as it could go.

It features some of the finest and most realistic acting I’ve ever seen in a game in a story packed with real power and emotion.

We’ve seen this sort of “cycle of violence “story done many times before but never done in a video game quite as well as it is here.

The writing is brilliant throughout and though at times it seems to be trying very hard to get you to feel the way it wants you to, it somehow still manages to do just that.

However….

there are many people out there that still just hate this game for many reasons.

Much of their criticism is completely valid.

I thought I would hate this game as well-mostly because it wasn’t the story that I wanted it to be.

This is where it gets tricky.

I think a piece of art should be looked at for what it tries to do and not what I would like it to do.

I would have loved to see a sequel that exclusively featured further adventures of  Joel and Ellie, but for better or worse, that’s not the story game director and writer Neil Druckman wanted to tell this time around.

So no matter what, this game was definitely going to be missing the great chemistry of those two that made the original so special.

But this one has a plenty of other things going for it.

The graphics and gameplay is better and smoother in every way…

and the story somehow seems even richer and deeper.

Is it a better game than the original?

No.

But…

Is it a worthy sequel that will keep you involved in its story and entertained by its gameplay for many hours?

Definitely.

9/10.
